(Shanghai – September 27, 2017) The Nan Xiang Tan Yuan Gallery will open a unique exhibition featuring Canadian artist Samuel Porteous (“Scobie”) on September 28th, on view until October 30th. China in the Western Imagination: Old Shanghai will feature 26 works by Porteous drawn from his colorful, graceful depictions of life in Shanghai during the1920s and1930s and the interaction between East and West that animated the city during that time.
Mr. Porteous who signs his works “Scobie” is an award-winning Shanghai-based artist/author with over 15 years experience living and working in China and Chief Creative Director and founder of the Drowsy Emperor Studio; a small new boutique design/content studio serving Chinese and Western audiences. Sam’s work, which includes visual arts, illustration, film and animation, as well as a passion for historic detail, focuses on Old Shanghai and the special place China holds in the Western imagination. His current major project is “China in the Western Imagination: 1849-1949” a multi-media examination in art and writing of the different ways China was presented and perceived in Western popular media from the Gold Rush to the founding of “New China”.
In 2015-2016 his artwork was selected by Shanghai government and Animation Association for a solo touring exhibition in Shanghai. An exhibition comprised of 40 works was displayed in 5 different cultural centers. Sam is currently working on several art commissions, graphic novel, documentary, animation and film projects, including working with major Chinese media company animation studio as Creative Director on an upcoming 3D animated China theatrical release film based on one of his graphic novels.
Admission to the show is 30 RMB which also includes access to Tan Yuan Gardens.
